The purpose of The American Legion’s National High School
Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and
appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part
of high school students.
Other objectives of the contest include the development of
leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and
intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties
and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American
citizenship.
Another purpose of the program is to assist students in paying
the high cost of a college education. Since its inception,
the contest has awarded well over $3 million in scholarships
to the participants at the National level of competition.
It currently awards $138,000 annually to Department (state)
winners competing at the National level. Many thousands of
dollars in scholarships have been awarded at Post, District,
and State levels.
The Lumberton Competition will consist of a 6 - 8 minute prepared oration.
The Prepared Oration must be on some aspect of the Constitution
of the United States with emphasis on the duties and obligations
of a citizen to our government.
The State and National Competition will consist of an 8 - 10 minute
Prepared Oration, plus a 3 - 5 minute oration on 1 of 4 possible assigned topics.
The same subject and oration used in the Department Contest (Texas)
must be used in the National Contest.
In 1994, 1999, and 2001, the National Winners were from the State of Texas.
It’s time to bring the trophy home again.
